DirectConnect for Oracle Installation/Reference for Windows NT |
|
| Chapter 1: Introduction |
DirectConnect for Oracle provides Open Client(TM) access to Oracle databases. It operates as a standalone gateway, in conjunction the Component Integration Services feature of Adaptive Server Enterprise (with the Extended Enterprise Option), and with OmniConnect.
In standalone mode DirectConnect for Oracle provides client applications with an Open Client interface to Oracle databases. To the client it appears as an Open Server(TM) application that understands Oracle SQL.
DirectConnect for Oracle can also be used with Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) or OmniConnect. The combination offers clients a Transact-SQL(R) interface to external Oracle data.
When used with ASE or OmniConnect, DirectConnect for Oracle transforms the Transact-SQL generated by ASE or OmniConnect to Oracle's native SQL. DirectConnect for Oracle also handles datatype mapping between Sybase datatypes and Oracle datatypes. DirectConnect for Oracle provides many of the features of a distributed database system when used in combination with ASE or OmniConnect. The combination enables location transparency, distributed query optimization, copy transparency, transaction transparency, and distributed joins.
When used with ASE or OmniConnect, you can join Oracle tables with Sybase Adaptive Server(TM), DB2, or other tables. Access to these objects through ASE or OmniConnect is transparent to the application.
The following hardware and software configurations are compatible with DirectConnect for Oracle release 11.0:
Hardware | Software |
|---|---|
PC 16MB RAM | Windows NT 3.51 or Windows NT 4.0 |
Oracle Products for Windows NT |
DirectConnect for Oracle requires approximately 5MB of disk space depending on the platform.
Each client connection requires 300KB.
If you are running DirectConnect for Oracle on the same machine as the Oracle database engine, you do not require SQL*Net.
When DirectConnect for Oracle is running on a different machine than the Oracle database engine, you need SQL*Net to allow DirectConnect for Oracle to communicate with the remote Oracle database. SQL*Net must be running on the machine with the Oracle database engine. You must have a license to use SQL*Net with the Oracle server for each client.
DirectConnect for Oracle, which acts as a client to the Oracle server, uses only the client component of SQL*Net. Therefore, if DirectConnect for Oracle and the Oracle server are running on different machines, the client component of SQL*Net must be installed on the machine running DirectConnect for Oracle.
For information on SQL*Net refer to Oracle documentation.
To run DirectConnect for Oracle using V 7.1 of the Oracle client software, at a minimum, the following Oracle DLLs must be found in the Oracle directory included in the PATH environment variable (for example orant71\bin):
To run DirectConnect for Oracle using V 7.3 of the Oracle client software, at a minimum, the following Oracle DLLs must be found in the Oracle directory included in the PATH environment variable (for example orant73\bin):
