Introducing Enterprise Connect

About this chapter

This chapter introduces the three Enterprise Connect Integrated Product Sets: Enterprise Connect Complete, Enterprise Connect Data Access, and Enterprise Connect Data Movement, which consist of components that provide transparent access, movement, and management of information in an Enterprise.

Contents

The Sybase Mainframe Connect(TM) Integrated Product Set (Mainframe Connect) provides a suite of products that enable access and integration of mainframe data. For more information about linking LAN-based and mainframe data using Mainframe Connect, see the Overview Guide for the Mainframe Connect Integrated Product Set.

What is Enterprise Connect?

Enterprise Connect is an integrated set of software applications and tools you can use to access, transport, and manage your data. Enterprise Connect provides all the connectivity tools you need to access and move data in a heterogeneous environment. Enterprise Connect provides the ability to access and to replicate from and to a variety of LAN-based, non-Sybase data sources.

Using Enterprise Connect, you can maintain a corporate overview of distributed operations, even when distributed business units run on a variety of hardware and database management system (DBMS) platforms. Enterprise Connect is database-independent middleware; it allows LAN-based clients to see a consistent picture of enterprise data no matter what the data source.

With Enterprise Connect Integrated Product Sets, you can perform the tasks as outlined by the following sections.

Enterprise Connect Data Access

With Enterprise Connect Data Access you can:

Enterprise Connect Data Movement

With Enterprise Connect Data Movement you can:

Enterprise Connect Complete

With Enterprise Connect Complete you have all the benefits of Enterprise Connect Data Access and Enterprise Connect Data Movement, plus you can:

Sybase Central plug-ins

Sybase Central is a graphical tool that provides a common interface for managing Sybase products. Each server product is managed by a service provider "plug-in" that operates in parallel with other service providers in the Sybase Central framework. Sybase Central runs on Windows 98 and Windows NT.

Sybase Central displays a visual representation of servers and provides a point-and-click interface for choosing options. Some plug-ins use Java Central, a Java-based viewer that you can access from Sybase Central.

Enterprise Connect provides these server plug-ins:

Sample solutions

Although there are many ways your site can use Enterprise Connect to access and move data, the scenarios in this section provide high-level examples of the solutions Enterprise Connect solves.

Enterprise Connect Data Access Scenarios

Sample solutions include:

Transparent access to local heterogeneous data stores

Profile

An insurance company has an application that processes claims and requires data from two sources: an AS/400 database and an Oracle database. To ease administration and eliminate the need for changes to the claims application, the insurance company uses Sybase components in Enterprise Connect Data Access.

Sybase components

The insurance company uses a combination of ASE/CIS, DirectConnect for AS/400, and DirectConnect for Oracle to retrieve the data within the application without the application (or the user) being aware of specific data location.

See Chapter 2, "Enterprise Connect Data Access" for descriptions of specific components.

The following figure illustrates this sample scenario.

Profile

A securities company requires an immediate customer/client profile when the broker receives a call from the client. The broker's application brings up the client profile immediately based on the caller's telephone number. This data is stored on that local work group's Informix database at their office in Memphis. Real-time feeds are stored on DB2 on an OS/390 host located in New York. Client inquiries regarding other investments and current prices need to be queried off the OS/390 host and displayed within the broker's desktop application. A real-time feed off a messaging queue updates DB2 when changes occur.

Sybase components

The client profile is stored and updated on Informix through DirectConnect for Informix, which is in the local office in Memphis. DB2 on OS/390 is in the corporate office in New York and accessed by DirectConnect for DRDA. This gives the securities company transparent access to heterogeneous data stores.

See Chapter 2, "Enterprise Connect Data Access" for descriptions of specific components.

Enterprise Connect Data Movement scenarios

Sample solutions include:

Consolidating data into a central repository

Profile

A telecommunications company has satellite offices that use Microsoft SQL Server to store local customer information. Headquarters uses ASE to store company-wide customer information. Replication Agent captures the changes in Microsoft SQL Server at the satellite offices and passes them to Replication Server. Replication Server applies data changes to the headquarter's consolidated customer database, which is stored in ASE.

Sybase components

The telecom company uses components in Enterprise Connect Data Movement. The components used to consolidate data include Replication Server (including Replication Server Manager(TM), or RSM, and ASE for storing the Replication Server System Database, or the RSSD), and Replication Agent for Microsoft SQL Server. This gives the telecom company uni-directional consolidation into a central repository.

See Chapter 3, "Enterprise Connect Data Movement" for descriptions of specific components.

Figure

The following figure illustrates this sample scenario.

Figure 1-3: Uni-directional consolidation into a central repositoryrasterDistributing data from a central database to databases in other locations

Profile

For a furniture catalog company, all order information comes into a central Oracle database. Orders are sent to the production site closest to the customer for furniture to be assembled and shipped from there. Replication Agent for Oracle captures changes in the central order database and passes them to Replication Server. Replication Server delivers only those orders applicable to a particular geography. This is accomplished through the target site's subscriptions to replicated data.

Sybase components

The furniture company uses components in Enterprise Connect Data Movement. The components include Replication Server (including Replication Server Manager, or RSM, and ASE for storing the Replication Server System Database, or RSSD), and Sybase Replication Agent. This gives the furniture company uni-directional distribution from a central repository.

See Chapter 3, "Enterprise Connect Data Movement" for descriptions of specific components.

Enterprise Connect Complete scenario

This sample solution shows how a company integrates the systems of a newly acquired company with its existing systems using components from Enterprise Connect Data Access and Enterprise Connect Data Movement.

Integrating systems of a newly acquired company with an existing company

Profile

A retail company has just acquired another company. It needs to integrate its Oracle data with the mainframe DB2 data of the acquired company as quickly as possible to share information such as customer profiles and orders. Using components in Enterprise Connect Complete, the company can capture data changes and replicate them to other existing systems where they can be incorporated without having to re-code existing applications.

Sybase components

The retail company uses components in Enterprise Connect Complete. The components used to integrate the systems include Replication Agents, Replication Server (including Replication Server Manager, or RSM), and DirectConnects. This gives the retail company bi-directional, enterprise-wide replication.

See Chapter 2, "Enterprise Connect Data Access" and Chapter 3, "Enterprise Connect Data Movement" for descriptions of specific components.
