| Enterprise Data Management: Sybase Central |
Sybase Central is the Sybase graphical management tool. From one central location, Sybase Central lets you manage Sybase servers, databases, and tools running on different platforms. Figure 2-13 shows the Sybase Central architecture¾a central, common interface with modular plug-ins for supported products¾that ensures that you can manage disparate servers seamlessly.

Sybase Central provides plug-ins for these servers:
Each plug-in lets you connect to installed products, supports a product-specific object hierarchy, and provides the wizards, dialog boxes, and property sheets you need to manage the product.
You can also manage Sybase servers from the command line isql interface and from scripts. However, Sybase Central is more intuitive and easier to learn.
Each plug-in includes online help, which describes how to perform tasks, presents conceptual information, and links to related information in the Sybase Technical Library.
Sybase Central runs on Windows 95 and Windows NT. It provides toolbars, menus, and a two-pane interface similar to that of Windows 95/NT Explorer.
The Adaptive Server Enterprise plug-in allows you to manage and monitor multiple SQL Server 11.0.x and Adaptive Server 11.5 and later installations from a single PC.
Using Sybase Central, you can manage most aspects of Adaptive Server without entering commands or stored procedure syntax, including:
You can monitor Adaptive Server Enterprise performance in real time from Sybase Central. Monitor Server lets you keep track of Adaptive Server Enterprise performance indicators so that you can manage your system resources more efficiently. Monitor Server collects performance data that you can view graphically through Sybase Central or send to a file for analysis at a later time.
Monitor Server measures several indicators, including transaction volume, CPU usage, cache usage, network traffic, device I/O, and locking activity. You can monitor these indicators for Adaptive Server Enterprise or for user processes.
The Replication Server plug-in for Sybase Central lets you create a replication system domain in which you can include and manage all or a part of the data servers and Replication Servers in your business enterprise.
Sybase Central displays a topological view of your domain that includes routes, connections, and replication agents as well as data servers and Replication Servers.
From Sybase Central, you can display and manage most aspects of your replication system without entering RCL commands or stored procedure syntax.

DirectConnect Manager provides system management for the Sybase DirectConnect family of data access servers. With DirectConnect Manager you can configure, manage, troubleshoot, and control your data access environment from Sybase Central.
