When you use Sybase Character Sets with Open Client and Open Server, you can enter and display data on the client in any of the supported languages. If you are using Open Client 11.1 or later, you can convert data between any of the supported character sets within a language group or between any supported character set and Unicode UTF-8.
DirectConnect data access servers provide connectivity between LAN-based clients and enterprise data servers. You can use a DirectConnect server on its own to connect directly to a single, non-Sybase data server. Or, you can combine DirectConnect servers with other Sybase products such as OmniConnect or Adaptive Server to provide a Transact-SQL interface that allows you to access, move, and replicate data in a heterogeneous environment.
You can use the DirectConnect Manager plug-in for Sybase Central to configure, manage, and control your data access environment.
Enterprise Data Studio includes these DirectConnect servers:
Embedded SQL (ESQL)/C and ESQL/COBOL are supersets of Transact-SQL that let you place Transact-SQL statements in applications written in C and COBOL. Using ESQL/C and ESQL/COBOL, you can write custom client applications that access Adaptive Server databases.
You can use the Full-Text Search engine to perform complex searches on text stored in Adaptive Server. For example, you can specify results order, select documents for the number of hits, and select documents that contain synonyms of a word you specify.
InfoMaker is a powerful, easy-to-use reporting tool that allows you to query your database and create and distribute custom reports.
jConnect is the Sybase JDBC driver that works with both Sun and Microsoft virtual machines. jConnect provides native access to all Sybase database products, including Adaptive Server, Replication Server, and servers based on Open Server. From Adaptive Server, jConnect can access more than 25 enterprise and legacy database servers. It can directly access Oracle, AS/400, and Informix databases when paired with the appropriate DirectConnect software.
The Sybase language modules make it possible for Adaptive Server and other Sybase products to display error and other messages in selected languages. By default, Sybase products are configured with the U.S. English language module.
MainframeConnect is mainframe software that works with DirectConnect for MVS to supply access to relational data on mainframes. It provides LAN-based clients with SQL read and write access to DB2 and other data sources running on DB2/MVS-CICS.
Monitor Server collects Adaptive Server performance data in real time and passes the data to Monitor Historical Server, Monitor Client Library, or the Adaptive Server plug-in for Sybase Central. You can display the performance data in Sybase Central in real time using tables and graphs.
Monitor Client Library is a Monitor Server application programming interface (API) that lets you develop custom monitoring applications for Adaptive Server.
Historical Server saves Adaptive Server performance data in files for later analysis.
The ODBC driver for Adaptive Server is compliant with the Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) specification for applications to access relational data management systems using SQL. Many clients require ODBC drivers to access Adaptive Server databases.
The ODBC driver for DirectConnect is compliant with the Microsoft ODBC specification for applications using SQL. The ODBC driver for DirectConnect allows client applications to access any Sybase DirectConnect data access server.
The OmniConnect server uses the CIS feature of Adaptive Server to enable client applications to view and change data on multiple, heterogeneous data servers as if it were Sybase data. OmniConnect performs datatype transformations and enables heterogeneous joins.
OmniConnect is an Adaptive Server that does not support local data storage.
Open Client provides the interfaces that client applications, third-party products, and other Sybase products need to communicate with Adaptive Server and Open Server applications. Open Client provides runtime libraries and additional tools you need to develop custom client applications. Open Client network services support specific protocols such as TCP/IP and DECnet.
Open ClientConnect allows the mainframe computer to act as a client in a distributed environment. Open ClientConnect is a library of routines, programming services, and runtime services that you can use to create client/server applications. It allows mainframe programs written in C, COBOL, COBOL II, or PL/I to communicate with Adaptive Server, with Open Server applications, and with other LAN-based RDBMSs through DirectConnect data access servers.
Open Server provides the libraries, tools, and interfaces you need to create a custom server application. An Open Server application can be any type of server: it can perform calculations, provide access to real-time data, or interface with e-mail applications. It can communicate directly with Sybase and non-Sybase protocols. Replication Server and the DirectConnect gateways are Open Server applications.
In a distributed environment, Open ServerConnect allows the mainframe computer to act as both an application server and a data server. Open ServerConnect provides the programming interfaces needed so that CICS, IMS, and MVS data and application programs can appear as Sybase data to LAN-based clients.
PowerDynamo is a scalable Web application server that allows you to store, manage, and retrieve HTML and dynamic database information. PowerDynamo makes it possible for information stored in ODBC-compliant data sourcesūincluding Adaptive Server databasesūto be available over the Internet and intranet.
Replication agents are integral to the data replication process. Replication agents scan the transaction log of the primary database and pass transactions marked for replication to Replication Server for distribution to subscribing databases.
If you are replicating information from an Adaptive Server database, the replication agent, RepAgent, is an Adaptive Server thread. If you are replicating information from a non-Sybase database, you need an independent replication agent that is specific to the database you are copying from.
Enterprise Data Studio provides these replication agents:
Replication Server is an Open Server application that maintains replicated data in multiple databases while ensuring the integrity and consistency of the data. It provides client applications with local data access, thereby reducing load on the network and centralized computer systems.
Replication Server supports heterogeneous data servers. You can build a replication system from existing databases and applications and, as your enterprise grows and changes, you can add data servers and Replication Servers to accommodate your evolving business needs.
Security Guardian makes sure that client applications using third-party security mechanisms such as DCE, Banyan, and CyberSafe can connect securely to Adaptive Server.
The Specialty Data Store Developer's Kit enables you to create a Specialty Data Store (an Open Server application) gateway that allows Adaptive Server client applications to access external data as if it were stored on Adaptive Server.
SQL Advantage lets you execute Transact-SQL commands and system procedures from Sybase Central.
SQL Modeler provides a graphical interface from which you can design, create, document, modify, and maintain an Adaptive Server database.
SQL Remote provides two-way replication between an Adaptive Server consolidated database and large numbers of remote users running Adaptive Server on Windows NT. SQL Remote exchanges data using an underlying message system such as e-mail. Remote databases are typically connected only occasionally or indirectly to the network.
Sybase Central is a graphical tool that provides a common interface for managing Sybase and Powersoft server products. Each server product is managed by a service provider "plug-in" that operates in parallel with other service providers in the Sybase Central framework. Sybase Central runs on Windows 95 and Windows NT.
Sybase Central displays a visual representation of servers and provides a point-and-click interface for choosing options.
Some plug-ins use Java Central, a Java-based viewer that you can access from Sybase Central.
Enterprise Data Studio provides plug-ins for these servers:
Sybase XA products support the X/Open distributed transaction processing (DTP) model for software architecture. In this multi-tiered model, multiple application programs share resources provided by multiple resource managers. Resource managers can coordinate the work of client applications into global transactions that can be mapped onto several client connections.
The XA environment requires an application program, resource managers (such as Adaptive Server), and transaction processing managers. Sybase supports CICS, Encina, and TUXEDO transaction managers.
