What Is Enterprise Data Studio?

Enterprise Data Studio is an integrated set of software applications and tools you can use to store, access, replicate, and manage all of your data.

Enterprise Data Studio contains an enterprise-level database management system¾Adaptive Server Enterprise¾plus the software you need to access and move data across the network on a variety of operating systems and data servers. It provides a common Sybase/Powersoft(R) interface for both developers and users.

Enterprise Data Studio:

• Provides a fast, reliable, and highly scalable data server
• Enables integrated data access and movement in disparate data server environments
• Allows users to access data on remote, heterogeneous data servers as if it were local Adaptive Server data
• Enables replication of data across heterogeneous LAN-based and mainframe systems so that data may be shared among different operational and decision-support systems without affecting business performance
• Integrates disparate business systems, including legacy data, into a coordinated, easily accessed, and powerful corporate business enterprise
• Provides a common query language (Transact-SQL(R)), open languages and APIs, and common programming interfaces that allow developers, applications, and users to work with familiar tools no matter how your business enterprise changes or what new technologies are added
• Includes a graphical tool¾Sybase Central(TM)¾for managing Sybase and Powersoft components through a common interface

Five Options

Sybase provides the full Enterprise Data Studio and four additional options so that you can choose what best fits your business requirements.

The Enterprise Data Studio options are:

• Sybase Enterprise Data Studio 11.0

  This option provides all the features and capabilities of Enterprise Data Studio except access to mainframe data servers. Enterprise Data Studio includes database services, tools for custom applications, heterogeneous data access, data replication, database access from the Web, and data systems management.

• Sybase(R) Adaptive Server(R) Enterprise 11.9.2

  The Adaptive Server Enterprise option provides Adaptive Server database services and tools for transaction processing and mixed workload applications.

• Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise Replication(TM) 11.5

  The Adaptive Server Enterprise Replication option provides Adaptive Server database services and the tools and technology for replicating data in a Sybase environment.

• Sybase Enterprise Connect(TM) 11.7

  The Enterprise Connect option provides database-independent middleware, delivering replication technology and data access for a variety of different data server environments.

• Sybase Mainframe Connect(TM) 11.0

  The Mainframe Connect option provides tools for integrating LAN-based and mainframe data resources. Use Mainframe Connect on its own or combine it with other options.

In a few instances, a component may not be available on all platforms. Refer to the release bulletin for your platform for more information.

Enterprise Data Studio

The signature option, Enterprise Data Studio, provides the complete solution for LAN-based enterprise data management. Enterprise Data Studio includes all the tools and applications you need to manage, access, and replicate your data in a heterogeneous environment.

With Enterprise Data Studio, you can:

• Store and access data in high-performance, reliable, and scalable Adaptive Server databases
• Provide client applications with transparent, read/write access to heterogeneous LAN-based data sources
• Replicate your data in near real time to and from Sybase and non-Sybase databases across the network
• Create thin-client, dynamic Web applications using Adaptive Server as a Web repository
• Develop custom client applications written in C++ or Java
• Manage your enterprise data system through the Sybase Central graphical interface
• Store and retrieve data in any of the world's major languages and scripts
• Display Adaptive Server and other Sybase server messages in a choice of many different languages

Adaptive Server Enterprise

The Adaptive Server Enterprise option provides the reliable, scalable, and high-performance benefits of Adaptive Server and a set of tools and applications that enhance and extend Adaptive Server capabilities.

With the Adaptive Server Enterprise option, you can:

• Use third-party security mechanisms to secure the connection between client applications and Adaptive Server
• Create and print sophisticated reports
• Create thin-client, dynamic, database-driven Web application servers that use your Adaptive Server database as a Web repository
• Manage your database system using the Sybase Central graphical interface
• Create custom client applications written in Java or C++
• Create custom server applications
• Connect to other Sybase products, including Adaptive Server Anywhere, Adaptive Server IQ, and custom Open Server applications
• Create global transactions so that the work of a single transaction can be processed at multiple sites
• Use sophisticated queries to search text in your database

Adaptive Server Enterprise Replication

The Adaptive Server Enterprise Replication option provides Adaptive Server and all the database services of the Adaptive Server Enterprise option plus the ability to replicate data over the network to other Adaptive Server databases using Sybase Replication Server.

Replication Server maintains replicated data in multiple databases while ensuring the data's integrity and consistency. It provides users with local data access, thereby reducing load on the network and centralized computer systems.

With the Adaptive Server Enterprise Replication option, you can:

• Use all the features provided with the Adaptive Server Enterprise option.
• Replicate data from Adaptive Server databases to other Adaptive Server databases anywhere on the client/server network.
• Maintain a warm standby copy of a primary database so that, if the primary system fails, clients can switch to the standby copy almost immediately.
• Replicate an online transaction processing (OLTP) database to a decision-support database, to run decision-support queries in near real time, without affecting OLTP performance.
• Synchronize databases with different schemas, formats, and naming conventions.
• Replicate the execution of stored procedures from one database to another.
• Continue to work even if some system components are unavailable. Replication Server saves transactions in stable queues that allow databases to resynchronize without losing information.
• Manage your Replication Servers and your replication system using the Sybase Central graphical interface.

Enterprise Connect

The Enterprise Connect option provides all the connectivity tools you need to access and move data in a heterogeneous environment. The Enterprise Connect option combines the replication features of the Adaptive Server Enterprise Replication option with the ability to access and replicate to a variety of LAN-based, non-Sybase data sources.

Using the Enterprise Connect option, you can maintain a corporate overview of distributed operations, even when distributed business units run on a variety of hardware and database management system (DBMS) platforms. Enterprise Connect is database-independent middleware; it allows LAN-based clients to see a consistent picture of enterprise data no matter what the data source.

With the Enterprise Connect option, you can:

• Perform two-way replication between Informix, Oracle, and Adaptive Server Anywhere databases
• Connect to AS/400, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and Adaptive Server Anywhere databases using the appropriate DirectConnect software, either directly or in conjunction with OmniConnect
• Connect to several ODBC-compliant databases using DirectConnect Anywhere and an appropriate ODBC driver, either directly or in conjunction with OmniConnect
• Create custom client applications written in Java using jConnect for JDBC or in C++ using Open Client libraries
• Create custom Open Server applications
• Share data efficiently throughout your organization by moving it in bulk between data sources using the DirectConnect transfer facility
• Create and distribute custom reports
• Manage your replication system and your DirectConnect servers using the Sybase Central graphical interface

Mainframe Connect

The Mainframe Connect option supplies the connectivity tools that allow you to fully integrate your mainframe and LAN-based data sources.

The Mainframe Connect option stands on its own or complements other Enterprise Data Studio options.

With the Mainframe Connect option, you can:

• Enable client applications to access data stored on CICS, IMS, and MVS systems as if it were Sybase data
• Create custom mainframe applications that provide access to data stored on LAN-based servers
• Create Open Server gateways to other mainframe DBMSs, file systems, and applications
• Create custom applications that access mainframe data sources
