About This Book

The Sybase Enterprise Data Studio Feature Guide provides an overview of the tools, applications, and capabilities of the five Enterprise Data Studio(TM) options.

Audience

This book is for anyone interested in storing, accessing, and replicating data in a Sybase(R) or heterogeneous distributed environment.

How to Use This Book

This book contains the following parts:

• Chapter 1, "Enterprise Data Studio: An Overview," describes Enterprise Data Studio and the features and capabilities of the five different Enterprise Data Studio options.
• Chapter 2, "Enterprise Data Studio: The Building Blocks," describes the functionality provided by Enterprise Data Studio.
• Appendix A, "Product Descriptions," describes each component in Enterprise Data Studio.
• Appendix B, "Options and Components," lists each component of Enterprise Data Studio and the options in which each component can be found.

Use the Sybase Technical Library CD and the Technical Library Web site to learn more about your product.

• The Technical Library CD contains product manuals and technical documents and is included with your software. The DynaText browser (included on the Technical Library CD) allows you to access technical information about your product in an easy-to-use format.

  Refer to the Technical Library Installation Guide in your documentation package for instructions on installing and starting Technical Library.

• The Technical Library Web site includes the Product Manuals site, which is an HTML version of the Technical Library CD that you can access using a standard Web browser. In addition, you'll find links to the Technical Documents Web site (formerly known as Tech Info Library), the Solved Cases page, and Sybase/Powersoft newsgroups.

  To access the Technical Library Web site, go to support.sybase.com, click the Electronic Support Services tab, and select a link under the Technical Library heading.

Sybase Certifications on the Web

Technical documentation at the Sybase Web site is updated frequently.

For the latest information on product certifications and/or the EBF Rollups:

1. Point your Web browser to Technical Documents at the following Web site:

   techinfo.sybase.com

2. In the Browse section, click on the What's Hot entry.

3. Explore your area of interest: Hot Docs covering various topics, or Hot Links to Technical News, Certification Reports, Partner Certifications, and so on.

If you are a registered SupportPlus user:

1. Point your Web browser to Technical Documents at the following Web site:

   techinfo.sybase.com

2. In the Browse section, click on the What's Hot entry.

3. Click on the EBF Rollups entry.

   You can research EBFs using Technical Documents, and you can download EBFs using Electronic Software Distribution (ESD).

4. Follow the instructions associated with the SupportPlus^SM Online Services entries.

If you are not a registered SupportPlus user, and you want to become one:

To use SupportPlus, you need:

• A Web browser that supports the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), such as Netscape Navigator 1.2 or later

Conventions

Illustrations in this book use icons to represent these components of a data enterprise system:

• Adaptive Server(R) Enterprise/other data server
• Replication Server(R)
• Replication Agent(TM)
• DirectConnect(TM)
• OmniConnect(TM)
• Client application

Adaptive Server Enterprise or Other Data Server

This icon represents either an Adaptive Server Enterprise (Adaptive Server) or a non-Sybase data server. If the data server in an example must be Adaptive Server, the data server icon is labeled "Adaptive Server."

Replication Server

This icon represents Replication Server, the Sybase program that maintains replicated data on a local-area network (LAN) and processes data transactions received from other Replication Servers on the wide-area network (WAN).

Replication Agent

This icon represents a replication agent, a replication system process that transfers transaction information from a database to a Replication Server for distribution to other databases.

Every database from which you replicate data requires a replication agent specific to the database. Adaptive Server has its own replication agent thread, RepAgent. Replication agents for all other data servers are separate processes. This icon represents a replication agent that is a separate process.

DirectConnect

This icon represents a DirectConnect data access server. DirectConnect servers connect LAN-based clients and heterogeneous data servers. Enterprise Data Studio provides DirectConnect servers for Adaptive Server(R) Anywhere, Informix, and Oracle data servers.

OmniConnect

This icon represents OmniConnect. When combined with the appropriate DirectConnect server, OmniConnect provides transparent read/write access to database systems such as DB2, Informix, and Oracle.

Client Application

This icon represents a client application. A client application is a user process or application connected to a data server. It may be a front-end application program executed by a user or a program that executes as an extension of the system.

If you cannot resolve a problem using the manuals or online help, please have the designated person contact Sybase Technical Support or the Sybase subsidiary in your area.
